The marine program of the Convention for Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Secretariat of the Coral Triangle Initiative organized a Sustainable Ocean Initiative sub-regional training workshop in Jakarta (31 july – 3 August 2018) for the Coral Triangle countries. The workshop was convened by the Secretariat of the CBD in collaboration with the Government of Indonesia and various other partners, including the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security, the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia, the Ramsar Convention Secretariat, the International Coral Reef Initiative, the Commonwealth Scientific, Industrial Research Organisation of Australia, the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia, the UN Environment Coral Reef Unit and other relevant regional and international organizations and initiatives.

More than 40 representatives from seven countries reviewed the national and regional plans for the conservation of marine biodiversity in the CTI area, their impact on the Aichi targets and Sustainable Development Goals. During the workshop a marine spatial planning exercise was used to understand the importance of multi-sectoral decision making and to train the participants on how to use biodiversity resources, including OBIS, in the decision making process. The exercise materials are available in the OceanTeacher Global Academy and the workshop report can be downloaded from https://www.cbd.int/meetings/SOI-WS-2018-02
