OBIS Nodes

The OBIS Nodes are the powerful knowledge lighthouses of the OBIS network. Spread across the globe, the OBIS Regional Nodes and the OBIS Thematic Nodes connect local expertise to the global OBIS platform. The OBIS Nodes are the main entry point to the OBIS Community. They support data holders in integrating their data into OBIS. Each Node works closely with data providers—researchers, institutions, and local, national or regional biodiversity monitoring programs—to ensure that high-quality, standardized marine biodiversity data integrates into OBIS. OBIS Nodes play a crucial role beyond data management: they contribute to local capacity-building through training and workshops and help elevate local and national data contributors to the global level. They engage with local scientific and citizen communities, support local capacity development, promote data-related best practices, connect with decision-makers and relay their needs to the OBIS Community. The Nodes are essential to make OBIS a global operational and collaborative initiative.

OBIS Regional Nodes

Regional OBIS Nodes (RONs) are organizations that have committed to continuing to support OBIS within a geographic and/or national region using resources they have obtained. This includes serving data online and developing a data provider and end-user community. Some RONs provide tools and different language versions of the OBIS website.

OBIS Thematic Nodes

Thematic OBIS Nodes are organizations that contribute data to OBIS, usually based on taxonomic groups rather than geographic regions.
